Simple Spicy Tofu Burgers

  • Author: James
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 tofu burger patties 1x

Description

This spicy tofu burger is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with bold flavors. Made with firm tofu, warming spices, and a crunchy texture, it’s the perfect plant-based alternative to a traditional burger. Whether you’re new to tofu or a seasoned pro, this easy-to-make recipe is a must-try. Plus, it’s budget-friendly, high in protein, and completely customizable!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water (flax egg)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (or rolled oats)
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
  • Burger buns (whole wheat, brioche, or gluten-free)

Toppings (optional):

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Avocado
  • Spicy mayo (vegan mayo + sriracha)
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Vegan cheese
  • Tangy slaw (cabbage, lime, cilantro)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object (like a cast-iron skillet) on top. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Prepare the flax egg: In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp ground flaxseed with 3 tbsp water. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken.
  3. Crumble and mix: Once the tofu is pressed, crumble it into a large bowl. Add the spices, breadcrumbs, and flax egg. Mix until well combined. If the mixture feels too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs.
  4. Shape the patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into burger patties.
  5. Cook the patties: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add 1 tbsp olive oil. Cook each patty for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. (Alternatively, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway, or air-fry at 375°F for 12–15 minutes).
  6. Assemble and serve: Toast your burger buns, add your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make-Ahead: Uncooked patties can be frozen for up to 3 months. Cooked patties can be refrigerated for 3 days.
  • Variations: Add black beans for extra texture, swap chili powder for smoked paprika, or make mini sliders for appetizers.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns.
